Luchador is an Uncommon Effect Joker. It is one of just three Jokers that has a consumable-like function - namely, when this Joker is carried into a Boss Blind, it can be sold at any time during that round to disable its condition. For example, selling it against The Psychic allows the player to score hands with fewer than 5 cards, and selling it against The Wall or Violet Vessel returns the score requirement to that of a standard Boss Blind.

However, Luchador does not score you any points directly, and the Blind still has to be won by scoring the requirement. For this reason, it is generally more useful in the early game than the late game, as it can prevent untimely losses before you have time to sufficiently enhance the quality of your current build. While it theoretically can keep a build alive in a pinch in the late game, the scaling of later Antes (especially on Green Stake and higher) means playing down a scoring Joker can be extremely detrimental, and as such, Luchador offers little in this regard.

When Luchador is debuffed, either by its own Perishable Sticker or the Crimson Heart Boss Blind, it can still be sold for the normal sell price, but will not disable the current Boss Blind.

Usage Notes

  • Luchador will only take effect if sold after entering the Boss Blind.
  • Luchador does not disable the current Boss Blind if it is debuffed.
  • Selling Luchador against The Needle will give the player their hands back, but will not increase the score requirement.
  • The Non-Perishable challenge bans Luchador.

Synergies

  • Black Deck: The +1 Joker slot makes carrying this Joker less taxing, as it can be played alongside 5 scoring Jokers. The much less forgiving economy of this Deck in the early game also gives many more opportunities for this card to keep a run alive, allowing for proper capitalization on the benefits of an extra Joker slot later on.
  • Magic Deck: If the Judgement Tarot Card is discovered early in the run, the two starting copies of The Fool can be used to duplicate them, therefore allowing for a quick replacement of this Joker once its effect is activated.
  • Ghost Deck: This Deck has easier access to the Wraith |Spectral Card, which serves as a higher-risk but higher-reward version of the aforementioned Judgement. It can also use its starting Hex card to turn Luchador into scoring assistance, but this should only be done as a last resort.

Luchador doesn't benefit any poker hands directly. However, certain hands can occasionally appreciate the assistance it provides (such as Flush against one of the suit-debuffing Boss Blinds, or, less frequently, a High Card/Pair/Three of a Kind build against The Psychic).

Being a utility Joker, Luchador does not directly synergize with any build. However, it can enable a wealth of Jokers that are otherwise soft or hard countered by specific Boss Blinds, in the event they are encountered.

  • Cartomancer: This card has the potential to create Judgement at the start of a Blind, allowing this Joker to be immediately replaced upon activating its ability. In the interim, it can also serve as a soft 'scoring' Joker by creating such cards as The Empress, The Hierophant, and Justice.
  • Gift Card: An economy Joker that increases the sell value of all held cards, including itself, by $1 at the end of each round. Should these two be acquired simultaneously, it allows this Joker to serve both as a last-second run-saver and a potentially huge burst of money to keep it going in the next Shop.
  • Baseball Card: By granting X1.5 Mult to all held Uncommon Jokers, it allows this Joker to directly contribute to scoring while its effect is being reserved for a potentially devastating Boss Blind effect. It is especially useful when combined with the previous two synergistic Jokers, as they too are Uncommon.
  • Blueprint and Brainstorm: Selling either of these Jokers while they are copying Luchador will also disable the current Boss Blind, giving you two 'charges' of the effect negation to use. Boss Blinds can only be disabled once per round, so be sure to hold onto this Joker for a potential second save. This should only be done in extreme desperation, such as a boss effect preventing a lethal score on the final hand of a round, as both of these have immeasurably more power when copying scoring Jokers.
  • Campfire: By selling Luchador, not only is the Boss Blind's effect disabled, but it also gives this card an additional X0.25 Mult, thereby directly improving score and making it even easier to clear the requirement.
  • Joker Stencil: Selling Luchador creates an empty Joker slot, therefore immediately provides an X2 Mult for Joker Stencil.

Anti-Synergies

  • Painted Deck: This Deck has innate anti-synergy due to the -1 Joker slot penalty, and is generally not worth considering anyway due to the +2 hand size bonus allowing for easier assembly of more potent hands.
  • Matador cannot earn money from a disabled Boss Blind.
  • Chicot disables the effect of every Boss Blind while it is held. It is a direct upgrade over Luchador in most cases. Due to the role overlap, these two should not be used together.
  • Amber Acorn flips and shuffles all Jokers, so the player doesn't know which of their Jokers is Luchador. Trying to pick a Joker to sell could likely result in selling the wrong card by mistake.
  • If Crimson Heart debuffs this card, it can still be sold, but will not disable the Blind.

Strategies

Luchador can be useful when the play style of a round is extremely fragile to certain Boss Blinds, for example:

  • With a deck mostly consisting of a certain suit, or with Smeared Joker: The Club, The Goad, The Window, and The Head.
  • With a deck mostly consisting of face cards, or with Pareidolia: The Plant, The Mark.
  • With a high-leveled hand: The Flint.
  • Relying on a certain hand type, or with Card Sharp: The Eye.
  • Relying on using discards to build hands: The Wheel, The Water, Cerulean Bell.
  • Relying on combination of all held Jokers: Verdant Leaf, Crimson Heart.
  • Relying on good economy: The Ox and The Tooth.
  • With Burglar: The Mouth and The Fish.
  • Being relatively weak and relying on multiple hands to defeat blinds: The Needle, The Wall, and Violet Vessel.

In fact, for most runs, players are only vulnerable to 1-2 specific Boss Blinds and one Showdown Blind. In an Ante 8 run, excluding Ante 1 and 2 (at which point a specific gameplay style is unlikely to be formed), the probability of encountering both detrimental Boss Blinds, or a Boss Blind combined with a Showdown Blind is relatively low (both around 6%). Therefore, Luchador is sufficient to handle the risk. However, in endless mode, the player will face many Boss Blinds, so it would be better to have a method that can avoid multiple Boss Blinds (such as Chicot and Director's Cut).

Trivia

  • A Luchador is a Mexican wrestler. The joker image depicts a luchador wearing a typical wrestling mask and with a championship belt slung over his shoulder.
  • When playing against Verdant Leaf and selling Luchador, Luchador will disable the Blind before Verdant Leaf can disable itself. This can be inferred from the ordering of getting the sell value and the Blind being disabled, and is confirmed by the source code.[1]
  • This is one of the few Jokers that has a consumable-like effect, in which disposing of it is necessary to reap its benefits. The others are Diet Cola and Invisible Joker.
