Burglar is an Uncommon Effect Joker that gives 3 extra hands in exchange for all of the player's discard(s), doubling up as money generation if the player defeats the blind in 3 hands or less.

Usage Notes

  • Unlike other jokers related to hands and discards (such as Merry Andy), the effect of Burglar triggers when selecting the Blind. This mean that if Burglar gets disabled during a round (by Crimson Heart) or sold during a round, the hands and discards will not be changed. In other words, the player will still have 0 discards and get to keep the 3 extra hands for the rest of the round.
  • Since Ceremonial Dagger destroys the Jokers on the right side, Burglar would be destroyed before taking effect. For Madness, the order of Burglar and Madness does not matter, as Burglar always activates before Madness.
  • The Blast Off and Golden Needle Challenge Decks both ban Burglar.

Synergies

  • Blue Deck: The player starts with 1 extra hand, which when paired with Burglar, greatly increases the effectiveness of Jokers scaling from playing many hands.
  • Green Deck: As leftover hands and discards act as a pseudo-Interest, Burglar essentially trades $1 from each removed discard for $2 for each of the 3 extra hands.
  • Black Deck: Burglar mitigates the -1 Hand downside while also adding 2 extra hands, but removes all discards.

Burglar's extra hands make use of poker hands that can be played at a high frequency, such as High Card, Pair or Two Pair. On a deck that concentrates on one specific rank, this can also be Three of a Kind, Five of a Kind or Flush Five.

  • Ride the Bus, Green Joker, Square Joker, Spare Trousers, or Supernova all scale from playing hands, which is made way easier thanks to Burglar.
  • Burglar removing all discards allows Mystic Summit to always trigger its +15 Mult effect.
  • Burglar, unlike its discard counterpart Merry Andy, can be copied by Blueprint/ Brainstorm for an extra 3 hands each copy. This effect also poses no downside because of how the copying effects can be used on another Joker afterwards without any consequences.
    • Additionally, because of how Burglar triggers when blind is selected, the player can abuse this by setting the game speed down and swap Burglar with other Jokers that also triggers at the start of round, such as Marble Joker or Certificate for Blueprint/ Brainstorm to copy after Burglar has done its job. Note that while the game speed being slower makes this trick much easier, it still requires decent concentration and reflexes.
  • Vagabond can generate more Tarot cards if the added hands are used.
  • Card Sharp can get more triggers thanks to the fact that there can be more hands played, therefore a greater chance of the poker hand being played twice or more.
  • Loyalty Card (almost) always guarantees a trigger every blind.
  • Green Joker and Ramen can no longer be reduced since there's no discards to be used, except during The Hook's forced discard effect.

Burglar neutralizes the following Boss blinds remarkably well:

  • The Needle (Play only 1 hand): Burglar only triggers after The Needle has taken effect, which lets the player gain 3 extra hands at the expense of all discards.
  • The Water (Start with 0 discards): The Water functionally does nothing as Burglar already covers its effect, making it a glorified Small Blind with a higher score requirement.
  • On Blue Stake and above, the -1 discard effect can safely be ignored when using Burglar.
  • Grabber and Nacho Tong vouchers are recommended.
  • Burglar can mitigate Hieroglyph's -1 hand penalty and Petroglyph's -1 discard penalty can safely be ignored when using Burglar.

Anti-Synergies

Decks

  • Red Deck and Five-Card Draw: The extra discards provided by them are negated when a blind is selected.

Jokers

  • Any Joker that triggers off of discards like Banner and Delayed Gratification will have no effect.
  • Jokers that need cards to be discarded to scale like Yorick and Castle can no longer scale.
  • Jokers which give extra discards like Drunkard and Merry Andy will have no effect.
    • The Merry Andy, in particular, with the Burglar, will only decrease hand size by 1.
  • Jokers that activate on discard like Mail-In Rebate, Trading Card and Burnt Joker can no longer function.
  • Jokers that decrease in value when playing hands like Seltzer and Ice Cream will likely be used up faster.
  • Jokers that activate on the final hand such as the Acrobat and Dusk. Given that Burglar provides more hands, it would delay the chances for these jokers to come into effect.

Blinds

Some bosses affect the player in such ways that makes not having discards highly detrimental, crippling the run's potential by a wide margin:

  • The Hook's forced discard effect makes building specific poker hands significantly harder if the played hands are also throwaway hands.
    • Using a high amount of hands on this Boss blind, with or without a small deck can lead to an instant game over when the playing deck runs out of cards.
  • The Mouth: The player is locked to only playing the poker hands that can be formed from the starting hand. If there are no ways of altering the playing cards first drawn, like Death or Strength, this may be a dead-end on builds that only functions when playing a specific poker hand.
  • The Fish: After drawing the starting cards, all playing cards will be drawn face down, effectively making the player fight while blind.
  • The Tooth: Since the player will often play throwaway hands as pseudo-discards, this Boss blind can potentially be a deficit of $3 - 15.

As mentioned earlier, the effect of Burglar on the current round cannot be relieved by selling it. Therefore, any method that can avoid specific Boss Blinds (e.g. Luchador, Chicot, or Director's Cut) should be considered. Otherwise, Burglar should be sold before choosing Boss Blind if it would be difficult to deal with.

Vouchers

  • The +1 discard effect given by Wasteful and Recyclomancy is negated when a blind is selected.

Strategies

  • Burglar allows Jokers scaling off of played hands to scale much faster, such as Ride the Bus, Green Joker, Square Joker, Spare Trousers, or Supernova.
  • Burglar lets the player generate much more resources with Jokers that generate value off of played hands, such as Reserved Parking, Space Joker or Vagabond.
  • A build capable of scoring the elusive Naneinf score typically consists of playing on the Plasma Deck, while on the Boss blind The Serpent, after copying Burglar with Blueprint and Brainstorm, and holding both Baron and Mime.

Trivia

  • The Burglar wears the classic black-and-white stripes of an American prison uniform, first introduced in the New York prison system in the 1820s. This suggests the Burglar is also currently an inmate of a jail, or perhaps an escapee.
