Canio is one of the five Legendary Jokers that can be generated from using The Soul Spectral card, which in itself has a 3 in 1000 (0.3%) chance to replace any given card in a Spectral Pack or Arcana Pack.

Canio starts at X1 Mult and gains an extra X1 Mult whenever a Face Card is destroyed. This makes Canio perhaps one of, if not the best, multiplicative Mult Joker, as getting X2 Mult with just a single use of The Hanged Man is unfathomably powerful, and utilizing different Jokers as well as consumables can let it reach X10 Mult and higher quite easily, sometimes even pushing the boundaries at X25 Mult or X50 Mult, potentially even higher.

Synergies

Canio gives multiplicative Mult to all hands once at least 1 face card is destroyed. Because of its run-winning potency, the player should try to build into Canio whenever possible. However, with builds relying on face cards, destroying them for Canio might drastically affect the run's safety. Balancing destroying face cards for Canio and not succumbing to the temptation of scaling it is the key to winning a run with Canio.

Most decks can benefit greatly from Canio, as they all have face cards. Although, it is noteworthy that some decks grant easier access to Tarot cards, which includes The Hanged Man, making it an important factor to consider when the goal of the run is obtaining and maximizing Canio.

  • The Ghost Deck grants easier access to the otherwise hard to find Spectral cards via The Shop, in which 4 of them can help Canio scale by destroying playing cards, those being Familiar, Grim, Incantation, and Immolate.
  • An Erratic Deck seed containing high numbers of face cards will allow this Joker to reach a much higher ceiling much easier.
  • 15 Minute City starts with 24 Face Cards, allowing this Joker to scale easier.
  • Mad World starts with an Eternal Pareidolia, which allows this Joker to scale easier, but be wary not to destroy too many cards due to the small size of this deck.

Because of how Canio provides a strong source of multiplicative Mult, poker hands that have a higher base Mult and scaling tend to work better with it. The player may want to keep one or two Chips Jokers around though, to compensate for the lower Chips count numbered cards offer.

  • Pareidolia: Because every playing card now counts as a face card, Canio gains X1 Mult when any playing card is destroyed. This allows the player to choose which ranks to destroy and which ranks to keep.
  • Trading Card: By sacrificing a discard every round to destroy a face card, Canio can gain Mult at a much more consistent rate.
  • Erosion: This Joker and Canio is a reasonably strong combo due to the fact that focusing on destroying face cards often leads to a smaller deck than the starting size, which boosts Erosion by +4 Mult for every playing card below that starting amount.
  • Glass Joker: Due to the fact that Glass Cards can destroy themselves when scored, Canio pairs amazingly well with Glass Joker, which gains X0.75 Mult when a Glass card is destroyed. Whenever a Glass face card is destroyed, both Jokers will scale.
    • Due to a bug, when Glass Cards are destroyed by Spectral cards, Glass Joker will not scale, so it is recommended for the player to try and find Oops! All 6s or The Hanged Man when using this combination.
  • DNA can create a copy of a face card, allowing the player to destroy more face cards.
  • Any Joker that creates Tarot Cards will enable two crucial things for strengthening Canio: firstly, easier access to either Justice to enhance Face cards into Glass Cards or The Hanged Man to destroy Face cards, and secondly, holding unwanted Tarot Cards in the consumable slots to increase the chances that the aforementioned two will appear in Booster Packs; among them, Cartomancer and Vagabond are the easiest to activate and gain large amounts of Tarot Cards from. The Legendary Joker Perkeo can make the Justice and The Hanged Man even more common by duplicating them every round.
  • Sixth Sense can also work with Canio, but only if the player has Pareidolia.

Any card destruction effects can boost Canio, including Glass Cards. As such, the following consumables are useful for scaling Canio:

Tarot Cards:

  • The Hanged Man can be used to destroy face cards.
  • Justice can enhance face cards into Glass Cards, which have a 1 in 4 chance to be destroyed after scoring.
  • Death, Strength, and The Tower do not count as destroying face cards when used, since the original face card is not actually destroyed. The former two, however, can be used to create more face cards to be destroyed.

Spectral Cards:

  • Familiar has a chance to destroy a random face card and adds 3 additional face cards to the deck for the player to destroy.
  • Immolate can destroy up to 5 face cards in hand while also giving an immediate burst of money that can be spent to further enhance the quality of the deck.
  • Grim and Incantation both have a chance to destroy a random face card.
  • Ouija is capable of converting a large number of playing cards into face cards at once, but due to its low chance to do so (a fixed 3/13 or ~23.1% chance), it should be used with caution when taking into account its downside of -1 Hand size.
  • Cryptid can be used to create more face cards to be destroyed.
  • Omen Globe allows Spectral Cards to appear in Arcana Packs, which can be helpful to scearch for those mentioned in Synergetic Spectral Cards section.
  • Magic Trick can have a chance for Face Cards to appear in the shop, which can be bought to get destroyed to scale Canio. This can be further increased with help from Overstock and Overstock Plus to increase the shop selection, plus Reroll Surplus and Reroll Glut to make rerolling cheaper.

Anti-Synergies

Decks

  • Abandoned Deck and Medusa are not recommended due to their default lack of face cards, making it significantly harder to scale Canio.

Jokers

  • Jokers that synergize with Face Cards, such as Baron, Sock and Buskin, and Triboulet, do not work well with Canio because you're destroying many face cards, which will hurt the collective output.
  • Blue Joker will give fewer chips if a lot of Face Cards are destroyed.
  • The Plant makes it so that all face cards are debuffed, which means any face cards destroyed during this Boss blind will not scale Canio.

Trivia

  • Canio is a reference to the 1892 Italian opera Pagliacci by Ruggero Leoncavallo. The opera tells the tale of Canio, an actor and the leader of a theatrical company who murders his wife Nedda and her lover Silvio on stage during a performance. The destruction of face cards (which feature people on them) to increase Canio's power is likely in reference to these murders.
  • This Joker is animated, with Canio himself hovering just above the silver card face. Only the other Legendary Jokers and Hologram share this trait.
  • The other legendary Jokers are Chicot, Perkeo, Triboulet, and Yorick.
  • In some early versions of the game, the card was misspelled as "Caino". This is still true in internal references to the card within the game's code.
  • Canio is a certain type of jester or clown called a Pierrot, which is defined as a French male character dressed in a loose white costume with a sad-painted white face and a pointed hat.
