Hanging Chad is a Common Retrigger Joker that can retrigger the first scoring played card in a Poker Hand twice. This includes any Card Modifiers and/or extra+ Chips from Hiker, making it three times more effective.

Usage Notes

  • Hanging Chad will not retrigger a Red Seal. A card with a Red Seal that is played as the first scoring card will only trigger for a total of four times (once for the initial trigger, twice for Hanging Chad, and once more for the Red Seal).
  • DNA will not be triggered another two times by Hanging Chad and will only produce one copy of the played card.
  • To unlock this Joker, the player must beat a Boss Blind with a High Card.

Synergies

  • The need for powerful enhanced cards to use with Hanging Chad makes it important to utilize Tarot Cards and/or Spectral Packs.
    • The Zodiac Deck increases the rate of Tarot Cards in the Shop with its starting Tarot Merchant voucher.
    • The Ghost Deck allows for Spectral Cards to be found in the Shop, allowing for cards like Aura, Talisman, etc. to be more likely to acquire.
  • The Yellow Deck and Green Deck can improve the player's early economy to purchase Booster Packs. These include Standard Packs which may have Modified cards, reducing the need for further modification.
  • Cards in a Poker Hand can be rearranged in a player's hand before it is played, such that their highest scoring or most Modified card gets retriggered by Hanging Chad (i.e. the left-most card in a played hand). It does not matter how the cards are re-ordered in a player's Poker Hand. For example, a Straight will still count as one even if its played as Queen, Ace, King, Jack, 10. The Queen, in this case, will have triple its effect this way (i.e. it was a Polychrome Bonus Card).
  • Smaller hands like High Card or Three of a Kind can help mitigate their lack of played scoring cards, by using Hanging Chad. A singular especially powerful card can make triple its impact with this Joker.
  • Photograph is one of the best duos with Hanging Chad, since it's also a common Joker, making it much more attainable. If a Face Card is the first scored card in a hand, it gives a whopping X8 Mult, making it a strong early game to late game combination.
  • When paired with Hiker, the first played scoring card will be permanently upgraded thrice, adding +15 Chips to the card, instead of the usual +5 Chips.
  • Any Jokers that are reliant on a specific type of played card to trigger can benefit from Hanging Chad, as it allows it to be triggered two additional times.
    • Face-card Jokers like Scary Face, Triboulet, Smiley Face, etc. will be more effective with the additional triggers.
      • Business Card can provide up to $6, with a face-card being the first card played (which can be guaranteed with Oops! All 6s).
    • Suit-based Jokers like Greedy Joker, Gluttonous Joker, Onyx Agate, Ancient Joker, etc. can become even more powerful.
      • Bloodstone can provide up to X3.375 Mult with a  Heart card being played first (which can be guaranteed with Oops! All 6s).
    • Other rank-based Jokers such as Fibonacci, Odd Todd, Scholar, Walkie Talkie, etc. can benefit from the additional triggers.
      • If the first played card is a 2, Wee Joker can scale three times faster, by gaining +24 Chips instead of +8 Chips.
    • Lucky Cat can gain more XMult, by having a Lucky Card be played first, allowing it to potentially trigger more often.
  • Tarot and Spectral generating Jokers like Vagabond, 8 Ball, Séance, etc. can provide the necessary consumables to empower playing cards, and help in triggering the above mentioned Jokers (ex. changing the suit of a card with The Sun for Bloodstone).
  • Gold Seal can give a total of $9.
  • Glass Cards benefits greatly as it can provide a whopping X8 Mult base Mult.
  • Lucky Cards have a higher chance to proc with three triggers.
  • Polychrome Cards also greatly benefit as it can provide X3.375 Mult base Mult.

Trivia

Ted Mosby's "Hanging Chad" costume
  • The dot and line markings along the left edge of the card are binary numbers, where a dot represents 0 and a dash represents 1. The four visible numbers are, from top to bottom, 1, 2, 4, and 5. The hanging chad presumably obscures the symbols "••||" or "0011", which is binary for 3.
  • A "chad" is the fragment of paper created when a hole is made in paper or similar substances, such as with a hole punch. A "hanging" chad is one that hasn't fully separated, remaining attached at a single corner. This became a major issue during the 2000 U.S. presidential election, where hanging chads on punch card ballots led to controversy and multiple recounts, ultimately requiring a court decision on whether such ballots should be counted.
    • A visual reference to this appears in "How I Met Your Mother", where Ted Mosby wears a "Hanging Chad" costume in Season 1, Episode 6. This specific depiction of a "Hanging Chad" closely resembles the design of the card.
  • Despite being see through from the front, this Joker has the default face down texture.
  • This is the only retrigger joker that is not uncommon.
