Shoot the Moon is a Common Additive Mult Joker that provides +13 Mult for each Queen in the player's hand. Played cards do not trigger this Joker, regardless of whether they score. Queens that are debuffed by certain Blinds also do not trigger.

Usage Notes

If the player has any cards in hand that give X1.5 Mult, either Steel Cards or owning a Baron, it is ideal to manually drag the Queens to the far left so as to make Shoot the Moon's +Mult trigger before the XMult, maximizing the scoring power for the poker hand played. The reason for this is that any held-in-hand abilities are triggered from left to right. Therefore, placing any card far left will prioritize that specific held-in-hand effect. However, when enhancing a Queen itself to be a Steel card, the XMult will always apply before Shoot the Moon's +Mult.

To unlock Shoot the Moon, a suitable strategy may be to use the Erratic Deck to obtain a deck with relatively few  Heart cards, making the unlock condition easier to achieve.

Synergies

  • The Painted Deck has a larger hand size, making this Joker easier to use.
  • Erratic Deck may start the player with more Queens than usual, increasing the potential value of Shoot the Moon.

All hands that do not use Queens benefit from this Joker.

In decks with a hand limit of 8 or less, hands that require 5 cards make this Joker more difficult to use. Conversely, smaller hands, such as High Card, can use this Joker effectively every hand.

This Joker may not be good when trying to make Straights, as the Straight cannot exceed a Jack unless Shortcut is in use.

  • Mime doubles the trigger of this Joker's effect.
  • Midas Mask can add a buff to played Queens, providing an additional benefit thereafter when Queens are held in hand.
  • Reserved Parking provides cash when face cards are held in hand.
  • Baron increases the amount of Mult gained by X1.5 Mult per held King, which can ride off of Shoot the Moon's Additive Mult for additional value. Shoot the Moon can also be used as a stepping stone for strengthening Queens to Kings for a Baron build.
    • As previously mentioned, the player must physically move the Kings to the right of the Queens for maximum scoring value.
  • Trading Card can remove non-Queen cards, allowing you to see and hold Queens easier.
  • Death and Strength can turn some cards into Queens.
  • The Hanged Man can remove non-Queen cards, allowing you to see and hold Queens easier.
  • The Chariot can turn some cards into Steel Cards, which can multiply Shoot the Moon's additive Mult.
    • As previously mentioned, the player must physically move the Steel cards to the right of the Queens for maximum scoring value.
  • Deja Vu can apply Red Seals to Queens, allowing for more Shoot the Moon triggers.
  • Cryptid can make more Queens.
  • Paint Brush and Palette will permanently increase the player's hand size, enabling more Queens to be held at once.

Anti-synergies

Decks

  • Abandoned Deck, Mad World, and Medusa can be difficult to use, as they naturally contain no Queens.
  • Five-Card Draw does not work well with this Joker due to the decreased hand size and banning of hand size-increasing Jokers.

Jokers

  • Jokers that reduce hand size, like Stuntman and Merry Andy, will make the player hold fewer Queens.
  • The Hook discards 2 random cards after playing a hand, which may render Shoot the Moon useless if the Queens were discarded.
  • The Plant debuffs all face cards, rendering Queens useless for the round.
  • The Mark draws all face cards face down, which makes the player unable to tell which card is a Queen.

Trivia

  • "Shooting the Moon" is a term used in the popular card game "Hearts" for winning a hand by taking every Heart card and the Queen of Spades. Normally these cards give the players points - which you aim to avoid in Hearts, as the lowest scorer wins - but if a player can take all of them, their opponents get hit with a points penalty instead. It is a risky play to attempt, as missing just one card ruins the attempt and will cause that player to take a lot of points.
    • The +13 Mult refers to the Queen of Spades in Hearts being 13 points.
    • The unlock requirement is also a reference to Hearts, since it requires collecting and playing every  Heart card in the deck.
    • In demo versions, Shoot the Moon only worked for the Queen of Spades, as it does in Hearts.
  • The art of Shoot the Moon is based on the Queen of Spades, most noticeable by the design of their staves being the same.
