Superposition is a Common Effect Joker that will gift you a Tarot card whenever you can play a Straight that contains Aces: either Ace/K/Q/J/10 or Ace/2/3/4/5. This also includes Straight Flush and Royal Flush.

Synergies

  • Red Deck gives an extra discard, allowing the player to search for Straights with an Ace easier.
  • Blue Deck gives an extra hand, allowing the player to generate more Tarot Cards.
  • Painted Deck gives extra hand size, which can help the player with forming Straights with an Ace.
  • Abandoned Deck makes it impossible to get an A/K/Q/J/10 Straight, but about three times easier to assemble an A/2/3/4/5 Straight.
  • Shortcut: Normally, there are only two possible straights that contain an ace: A/2/3/4/5 and 10/J/Q/K/A. This makes it relatively difficult to trigger Superposition. Shortcut, however, allows straights to skip single cards, vastly increasing the number of ways this joker can be triggered.
  • Four Fingers: Similarly, though to a lesser extent, Four Fingers makes it easier to trigger Superposition by reducing the requirements for a straight to just 4 consecutive cards instead of 5.
    • Mathematically, assuming a standard 52-card deck: the number of 5-card hands that trigger Superposition increases by a factor of 12 with the addition of Four Fingers, a factor of 16 with the addition of Shortcut, and a factor of 84 with both. Meanwhile, the chance of getting any straight at all increases by a factor of 12.2 with the addition of Four Fingers, a factor of 12.8 with the addition of Shortcut, and a factor of 76.3 with both.
    • Be aware that the Ace must score for Superposition to trigger. 5/6/7/8/A will not trigger Superposition with only Four Fingers, though it will with both Four Fingers and Splash.
  • Jokers that give bonuses from playing Straights, like Devious Joker, Runner, Crazy Joker, and The Order, all work well with Superposition.
  • Scholar and Walkie Talkie: Will give additional chips and Mult, as Straights triggering the Superposition effect will always contain an Ace, plus a 10 or 4.
  • Grabber and Nacho Tong give additional hands, allowing the player to generate more Tarot Cards.
  • Wasteful and Recyclomancy give additional discards, allowing the player to search for Straights with an Ace easier.
  • Paint Brush and Palette both increase hand size, which can help players with forming Straights with an Ace.

Anti-synergies

  • Erratic Deck can make it difficult to use Superposition, as the randomized rank and suit makes it harder to form Straights.
  • Black Deck has slight anti-synergy, as 1 less available hand makes it slightly harder to find Straights. However, it is easier to take Superposition, as it is less likely to take up a crucial Joker slot needed for survival.
  • 15 Minute City and Mad World are not recommended, as these decks don't contain any Aces by default.
  • Five-Card Draw's -3 hand size makes it extremely hard to assemble Straights with an Ace.
  • Jokers that reduce hand size, like Stuntman and Merry Andy, have anti-synergy with Superposition, as a smaller hand size makes it harder to assemble Straights with an Ace.
  • Ectoplasm and Ouija have anti-synergy with Superposition, as a smaller hand size makes it harder to assemble Straight with an Ace. Not only that, but Ouija converts all cards held in hand into one single rank, which makes assembling Straights with an Ace less consistent.
  • The Manacle's -1 hand size makes it hard to assemble Straights with an Ace.
  • The Water will always start with 0 discards, making it very hard to assemble Straights with an Ace.

Trivia

  • In quantum mechanics, superposition is the ability of a quantum system to be in multiple states at the same time until it is measured. In Balatro, Aces can be either high or low depending on the rest of the hand. The sprite of this Joker resembles an electron, which can only have +1/2 or -1/2 spin, similar to how Aces can only form high or low straights.
  • The background of the Joker art for Superposition contains a repeating pattern of 𝜓 (psi) and λ (lambda with right arrow above). According to LocalThunk, this is a reference to eigenvalue equation A^ψi=λiψi,[1] a cornerstone of quantum mechanics about measurement and the nature of quantum states. 𝜓 is the eigenfunction/eigenstate (a specific quantum state of the system), and 𝜆 is the eigenvalue (value of measuring the observable quantity under this state), which could be a vector. Superposition means the system can be in multiple eigenstates at the same time.
