Runner is a Common scaling Chips Joker that adds Chips to played hands. The amount of Chips added begins at +0 and is permanently increased by +15 when the player plays a hand that contains a Straight (including Straight Flush and Royal Flush).

Synergies

  • Abandoned Deck and Mad World both have fewer cards than the standard Deck, making it easier to locate specific cards for Straights.
  • Painted Deck with its increased Hand Size, can make Straights easier to form with more cards held in hand.
  • Plasma Deck significantly benefits from early Chips value. This makes Runner an easy choice for the early to mid game, although it can be carried into late game if the player builds around Straights.
  • 15 Minute City starts with an Eternal Shortcut, which allows Straights to be made with gaps in them, making it easier to get that hand.
  • Shortcut allows Straights to be made with gaps in them, making it easier to get that hand.
  • Four Fingers allows Straights to be scored with only four cards instead of the usual five, making it easier to get that hand.
  • The Order will give X3 Mult as long as the played hand contains a Straight, making it a strong partner with Runner for both scaling Chips and XMult.
  • Crazy Joker gives +12 Mult on Straights, being especially useful to increase Mult during the early game.
  • Grabber and Nacho Tong give additional hands, allowing Runner to scale faster.
  • Wasteful and Recyclomancy give additional discards, allowing the player to search for Straight hands easier.
  • Paint Brush and Palette both increase hand size, which can help players with forming Straights.
  • Telescope can help upgrade Straight using Saturn.

Anti-Synergies

  • Black Deck, Blast Off, and Golden Needle all have poor synergy with Runner due to their reduced number of hands.
  • Erratic Deck can make it difficult to use Runner as the randomized rank and suit makes it harder to form Straights.
  • Five-Card Draw's -3 hand size makes it extremely hard to assemble Straights.
  • Jokers that reduce hand size, like Stuntman and Merry Andy, have anti-synergy with Runner, as a smaller hand size makes it harder to assemble Straights.
  • Ectoplasm and Ouija have anti-synergy with Runner, as a smaller hand size makes it harder to assemble Straights. Not only that, but Ouija converts all cards held in hand into one single rank, which makes assembling Straights less consistent.
  • The Manacle's -1 hand size makes it hard to assemble Straights.
  • The Water will always start with 0 discards, making it very hard to assemble Straights.
  • The Eye will only allow the player to play any given Poker Hand once, limiting the scaling opportunities for Runner.

Trivia

  • This is the only Chip Joker that scales by playing a hand of a specific type; in this case, Straights (which can include Straight Flushes). Its counterpart, Spare Trousers, scale its +Mult by playing hands that contain Two Pairs.
  • The runner's ID number, #345, is itself a (short) Straight.
  • The name is a reference to how in some games, straights are called "runs".
