Mr. Bones is a unique Uncommon effect Joker. By equipping this Joker, players can survive a blind without scoring the required amount of chips, provided they manage to score at least 25% of the target amount. Upon playing all of their hands, Mr. Bones will perish and grant victory to the blind, with the result screen saying "Saved by Mr. Bones". This also skips the normal reward money the player gets for beating a Blind. The player still gains interest, Anaglyph Deck still gives a Double Tag, and the Investment Tag still gives $25.

Mr. Bones will not save the player when they run out of cards, even if the player has reached 25% of the blind requirement.

To unlock this joker, the player must lose 5 runs.

Usage Notes

Synergies

  • Black Deck gives 1 extra Joker slot in exchange for 1 fewer hand, which can be used by Mr. Bones, as 1 less hand makes it harder to get to the required score.

This Joker does not affect any poker hand but may be slightly more useful for certain builds.

  • Showman can let the player pick up multiple Mr. Bones, which they would likely need the effects of due to missing 3 scoring Jokers by that point.
  • Blueprint and Brainstorm can't copy this Joker, so don't try to get multiple extra lives out of it.
  • Since Mr. Bones is an uncommon, Baseball Card makes it give X1.5 Mult, making it more valuable.
  • Matador becomes less punishing with Mr. Bones. This can be useful for the player to get a lot of money with little to no consequences.
  • Being saved by Mr. Bones will still award the player a win on Ante 8, effectively making this joker divide the final round's chip requirement by 4. Note that being saved by this Joker will not allow it to gain a stake sticker.

Anti-synergies

  • If Mr. Bones gets debuffed on the final hand of Crimson Heart, it will not save the player.

Strategies

Mr. Bones can be useful when the play style of a round is extremely fragile to certain Boss Blinds, for example:

  • With a deck mostly consisting of a certain suit, or with Smeared Joker: The Club, The Goad, The Window, and The Head.
  • With a deck mostly consisting of face cards, or with Pareidolia: The Plant, The Mark.
  • With a high-leveled hand: The Flint.
  • Relying on a certain hand type, or with Card Sharp: The Eye.
  • Relying on using discards to build hands: The Wheel, The Water, Cerulean Bell.
  • Relying on combination of all held Jokers: Verdant Leaf, Crimson Heart.
  • Relying on good economy: The Ox and The Tooth.
  • With Burglar: The Mouth and The Fish.
  • Being relatively weak and relying on multiple hands to defeat blinds: The Needle, The Wall, and Violet Vessel.

In fact, for most runs, players are only vulnerable to 1-2 specific Boss Blinds and one Showdown Blind. In an Ante 8 run, excluding Ante 1 and 2 (at which point a specific gameplay style is unlikely to be formed), the probability of encountering both detrimental Boss Blinds, or a Boss Blind combined with a Showdown Blind is relatively low (both around 6%). Therefore, Mr. Bones is sufficient to handle the risk. However, compared with other methods that can avoid specific Boss Blind (e.g. Luchador and Director's Cut), Mr. Bones still needs at least 25% of the score, so it cannot handle specific situations, such as encountering The Psychic with a hand size below 5. And in endless mode, the player will face many Boss Blinds, so it would be better to have a method that can avoid multiple Boss Blinds (such as Chicot).

When dealing with Crimson Heart, a possible strategy is to sell all Jokers except for the one being debuffed and Mr. Bones when there are two hands left. As Crimson Heart will not select a Joker consecutively, this ensures that Mr. Bones will not be debuffed during the last hand.

Trivia

  • The name "Mr. Bones" is based on the meme "Mr. Bones' Wild Ride"[1], which was a car ride made in Roller Coaster Tycoon 2 that was 30,696 feet long and took 4 in-game years to ride to completion, with the riders exclaiming "I want to get off Mr. Bones' Wild Ride".
  • Mr. Bones can bail the player out of any round before Ante 39. This is because at ante 39 the required score is "NaN" - Not a Number - and the game will not recognize any number as at least 25% of the requirement.
  • Normally, Mr. Bones can't save the player if they run out of cards in their deck. However, if the player has two Mr. Bones, running out of cards puts the game in a glitched state where it ends the round every frame, with very strange results. Alternately, instead of a second Mr. Bones, this glitched state can be achieved by selling Luchador against The Wall or Violet Vessel immediately after playing a losing hand to reduce the blind requirement below the achieved score. Using this glitch, it's possible to go past ante 39. If done on a boss round, it ups the ante constantly.
  • Mr. Bones is one of three "spooky" Jokers that came as a part of a pin set alongside Madness and Scary Face as a merch collab between LocalThunk and Makeship.[2]
