Seltzer is an Uncommon Retrigger Joker that temporarily boosts played hands' effect by re-triggering each scored card. It lasts for a total of 10 hands and will disappear after the 10th hand is played and retriggered (denoted by the text "Drank!").

In a build with many enhanced cards, Seltzer can be a powerful joker, especially in the late game. Note that Seltzer does not retrigger a Red Seal. A card with a Red Seal will only activate three times: once for the initial trigger, once for the Red Seal, and then lastly, for Seltzer.

Due to Seltzer's limited lifespan, it is often used to get the highest scoring single hand possible in endless mode before your inevitable death.

Synergies

  • Zodiac Deck is helpful for finding tarot cards to make the enhanced cards that make Seltzer work effectively.
  • Red Deck is able to find better hands on average, so Seltzer will last longer, as less hands need to be played per round.
  • Black Deck is able to stack more Jokers that benefit from Seltzer's effect. Adding even a single XMult Joker like Ancient Joker can be an extra X7.5 Mult normally, but with Seltzer it becomes an extra X57 Mult.
  • Plasma Deck gains a huge boost from stacking XMult modifiers, which Seltzer enables very well.

Any 5-card hands like Flush, Straight, or Full House will provide more retriggers from Seltzer. In particular, Flush Fives, with five of the same very strong duplicated card, work very well.

  • Any Joker that triggers on scoring will have its effect doubled, for instance Scary Face for Chips, Fibonacci for +Mult, The Idol for XMult, or Rough Gem for money.
  • Jokers that scale based on cards played, like Lucky Cat and Hiker, work very well with Seltzer, as the cards they scale with will always retrigger, and the scaling will remain after Seltzer is consumed.
  • Jokers like 8 Ball (in particular, due to its on scoring nature) and Cartomancer can provide frequent Tarot cards to buff up playing cards.
  • Throwback rewards you for skipping blinds, making Seltzer last longer and into more difficult Boss Blinds.
  • Glass Cards are very powerful with Seltzer, so Glass Joker can be a useful addition to compliment their usage.
  • Certificate's Red Seals lend themselves well to the late-game endless runs Seltzer is often used on, and the Gold Seal effect can be retriggered.
  • If you have enough XMult from other Jokers, Polychrome Cards or Glass Cards, adding another retrigger Joker like Sock and Buskin can be more valuable than adding another XMult Joker. Blueprint and Brainstorm can also be used for this purpose, more flexibly even.

Anti-Synergies

  • Copying cards with DNA will quickly use up Seltzer's retriggers.
  • Jokers that incentivize playing many hands per round, such as Green Joker or Vagabond, will similarly cause Seltzer to be spent quickly.

Boss Blinds

  • If a hand that is not allowed is played during The Psychic, The Mouth or The Eye, Seltzer will still lose a retrigger.

Usage Notes

Trivia

  • The Joker's art depicts a seltzer bottle, also known as a soda siphon. These were historically used by clowns to spray soda water as a prank, which was the initial inspiration for the Joker.[1]
    • Despite this, the pop-up before disappearing will say "Drank!", tying in with its status as a Food Joker instead[2].
    • The center of the bottle features a small Joker/Jimbo logo similar to those on Riff-Raff and Baseball Card.
    • Seltzer's effect to retrigger all scoring cards in a played hand could be a reference in needing to pull the bottle's trigger repeatedly to effectively spray water from the nozzle.
  • In early demos of the game, Seltzer is referred to as "Selzer", which seems to be a spelling error. This is still true in internal references to the card within the game's code.
  • This Joker is part of a group of "Consumable" Jokers that can be destroyed with usage, dubbed "Food Jokers" due to their shared theme. The other Jokers in this group are Ice Cream, Popcorn, Gros Michel, Cavendish, Egg, Turtle Bean, Ramen, and Diet Cola.[3][4]

In other media

  • Seltzer appears as a weapon in the Ante Chamber DLC of Vampire Survivors, albeit with the behavior of Fibonacci.
