The Abandoned Deck is an unlockable Deck in Balatro. This deck is unlocked by winning a run with the
Green Deck ( At end of each Round: <br> 2 per remaining blue <br> 1 per remaining red <br> Earn no orange Discover at least orange items from your collection Green Deck.png) on any stake.
Starting Contents
The Abandoned Deck contains cards numbered 2 through 10 and aces of the four suits but is missing all
Face Cards (Kings, Queens, and Jacks). This brings its total card count down to 40 instead of the normal 52, the lowest starting card count out of any non-challenge deck in the game.
Synergies
The smaller size of this Deck leads to a much higher rate of drawing Pairs, Straights, and Three of a Kind, even in the early game.
The lack of face cards in the Abandoned Deck means that the average chip value of a hand is significantly lower than that of any other 52-card deck. If the player can overcome this early weakness of the deck, they are significantly better off for the late game than the other starting decks.
Note: The absence of face cards would not make a straight between an Ace card and cards numbered 10, 9, 8, and 7 possible.
Ride the Bus (This Joker gains +1 per orange hand played without a scoring orange card <br> Common Additive Mult Mixed Ride the Bus.png), especially if found early on, is a free source of infinite scaling, as the deck starts out with no face cards.
- Cards that boost specific ranks, such as
Hack (Retrigger each played orange, orange, orange, or orange Uncommon Retrigger On Scored Hack.png) and
Fibonacci (Each played orange, orange, orange, orange, or orange gives +8 when scored Uncommon Additive Mult On Scored Fibonacci.png), are much easier to play around due to the smaller size of this Deck. Other Jokers like this are
Odd Todd (Played cards with orange rank give +31 when scored <br> gray Common Chips On Scored Odd Todd.png),
Even Steven (Played cards with orange rank give +4 when scored <br> gray Common Additive Mult On Scored Even Steven.png),
Walkie Talkie (Each played orange or orange gives +10 and +4 when scored Common Chips and Additive Mult On Scored Walkie_Talkie.png), and
Scholar (Played orange give +20 and +4 when scored Common Chips and Additive Mult On Scored Scholar.png).
The Idol (Each played [[Card Ranks|orange]] of [[Card Suits|orange]] gives 2 when scored<br><small>Card changes every round</small> In one hand, earn at least orange chips Uncommon Multiplicative Mult On Scored The Idol.png) has fewer options to choose from, making it more useful without editing the deck.
Boss Blinds
The Plant ( Boss The Plant.png) and
The Mark ( Boss The Mark.png) are irrelevant as long as the player doesn't add any Face cards or has
Pareidolia (All cards are considered orange cards Uncommon Effect N/A (Passive) Pareidolia.png).
Anti-Synergies
Jokers
- Jokers that synergize with face cards should be avoided unless the player has
Pareidolia (All cards are considered orange cards Uncommon Effect N/A (Passive) Pareidolia.png) and even then, should still be avoided if they require particular ranks such as
Shoot the Moon (Each orange held in hand gives +13 Play every Heart card in your deck in one round. Common Additive Mult On Held Shoot the Moon.png).
Erosion (+4 for each card below orange in your full deck <br> Uncommon Additive Mult Independent Erosion.png) changes to apply to every card below 40 in the deck rather than 52, making it much harder to use effectively without running out of cards during a Blind.
Blue Joker (+2 for each remaining card in orange <br> Common Chips Independent Blue Joker.png) applies only 64 chips on the first hand of the round, and the returns only diminish further, making this joker difficult to use effectively without adding tons of cards to the deck.
Trivia
- The Abandoned Deck is the only starting deck to not initially contain 52 cards, making it the smallest deck in the game.
- An abandoned place usually has little to no people. This deck reflects this by deleting all Face Cards.
