Grim is a Spectral card that destroys one random card in hand, then adds 2 random enhanced Aces to hand.

Usage notes

  • Grim cannot add Stone Cards, similar to Incantation and Familiar.
  • Grim cannot be used when there is only 1 card in hand, which can happen if the player's hand size is one or the player has destroyed cards until there is only 1 card left.
  • The Fragile challenge bans Grim.
  • Grim, alongside other card-destroying Spectral Cards Familiar, Immolate, and Incantation, will not scale Glass Joker after destroying a Glass Card. This is presumed to be a bug.

Synergies

Decks

  • Abandoned Deck: As the Abandoned deck starts with fewer cards, the added Aces will be drawn more often.
  • Erratic Deck: If the starting deck contains a larger number of Aces, Grim can further increase this.

Poker Hands

Grim adds 2 of the same rank, which can make same-rank poker hands such as Four of a Kind easier to form.

Jokers

  • Hologram gains X0.5 Mult from the 2 added cards.
  • Driver's License requirement to reach 16 enhanced cards in the deck can be reached faster with the 2 added enhanced cards.
  • Vampire can remove the innate enhancements on the Aces for X0.1 Mult each.
  • Scholar, Fibonacci, and Odd Todd all activate on the Aces that Grim provides.
  • Hanging Chad, Seltzer, and Dusk all retrigger the innate enhancements on each Ace. This also applies to any Gold Cards or Steel Cards with Mime.
  • As Grim adds 2 of a specific rank, hands consisting of multiple Aces are easier to form. This benefits jokers like Sly Joker, Zany Joker, and The Family.

Consumables

  • Aura, Deja Vu, and Talisman: Can further improve the enhanced cards added by Grim.
  • Death and Cryptid: Can copy the Aces with their respective enhancements.
  • Strength: Can further increase the number of Aces in the deck.

Anti-Synergies

Poker Hands

With more of 1 specific rank, Straights and Straight Flushes are generally harder to form.

Jokers

  • Erosion: As Grim adds more cards than it destroys, Erosion loses +4 Mult.
  • Any Joker reliant on a non-Ace rank such as Hack, Baron, and Cloud 9 has less value with more Aces added to the deck.

Trivia

  • The origin behind the name 'grim' likely originates from 'grimoire' rather than the modern term 'grim', meaning somber or bleak. A grimoire is a book of magic or alchemy, usually used for containing spells or summoning, which may have influenced Grim's effect of creating cards.
  • Grim is part of a trio of spectral cards with very similar effects. The other cards are Incantation and Familiar. These three cards share the effect of destroying one card and adding enhanced cards of specific ranks (Numbered cards for Incantation, Face cards for Familiar, and Aces for Grim).
    • The sigil on the grimoire's cover is similar to an ace of spades, further tying into the card's effect.
