Cryptid is a Spectral card that creates 2 copies of a selected card, allowing the player to easily create copies of a specific card in their deck.

Usage notes

Similar to Death, the copies are almost completely identical, including Enhancements, Editions and Seals and permanently gained chips (from Hiker).

Exceptions and differences with Death include when copying the force-selected card from the Cerulean Bell: though the copies are not force selected by default, they cannot be unselected once selected once, or when copying a face-down card from The Mark: the copies will be face-up, revealing their identity while still keeping the original card face-down. Another difference is that death does not add new cards to the player's deck, and does not scale Hologram unlike cryptid.

Synergies

  • Cryptid synergizes very well with deck fixing cards when used correctly, such as The Hanged Man, because it is very effective and efficient in focusing the player's entire deck around multiple copies of a single card.
  • Cryptid also copies enhancements, so it is very easy to make a stupidly strong deck if the player has Perkeo.
  • Baron gives exponentially more scoring when a Cryptid is used to make copies of a Red Seal Steel King. With enough Cryptids and the right Jokers, the elusive naneinf score can be achieved.
  • Hologram gets a free X.5 Mult boost when a Cryptid card is used.
  • Glass Joker and Canio both benefit from Cryptid as it can add more face/glass cards to destroy and scale up.

Anti-Synergies

  • Erosion becomes weaker after using Cryptid.

Strategy

  • Cryptid creates 2 copies of 1 selected card in the player's hand. This effect is very powerful for helping the player find a specific card wanted, as it is basically tripling a specific card in the deck with pretty much no downside with just one use.
  • Cryptid can be used to copy cards that already have a good Enhancement, Edition and/or Seal. ex: Red Seal Glass Polychrome King.
  • Using Cryptid is highly beneficial to most builds, ranging from High Card to Flush Five builds. Inversely, it may not work very well for Straight/Straight Flush builds, as the sudden influx of a rank may make it harder to find other ranks.
  • Cryptid bypasses the hand size limit, which can be useful in a High Card build utilizing Steel Cards if the player has a way to hold multiple copies of Cryptid at the same time, e.g. by using Perkeo. Even if not attainable, one single Cryptid use will still give the player what is essentially +2 hand sizes, which is immense value.
  • Unlike Death, Cryptid does not modify other cards but rather adds more cards, which might worsen its deck-fixing value.
  • Do note that, if there is no good card for Cryptid to copy, it might be best to skip it entirely, as using it can bloat the deck and make it harder to find other cards.

Trivia

  • The term Cryptid is defined as a creature of legend or mythological origins, usually found in stories told by people who have believed that said creatures exist but is not actually proven.
  • The skull in Cryptid's art is based on a Jackalope, a mythological creature of American folklore that is said to be a rabbit with big antler-like horns.[1]
    • The skull also looks like other spirit-based creatures or gods from different folklore such as the Wendigo, Leshy (both of which are commonly, falsely depicted as having a deer skull), and the Celtic god of fertility, Cernunnos.
