Aura is a Spectral card that allows the player to give 1 selected card a randomly chosen edition.

Usage notes

  • The odds of each edition are weighted, with a 50% chance to make a card Foil, a 35% chance to make a card Holographic, and a 15% chance to make a card Polychrome. These are the same odds that The Wheel of Fortune has when upgrading a Joker when it triggers.
  • When playing against The Pillar, unlike tarot cards that give enhancements, using Aura to add editions to debuffed cards does not make them be considered as not played and recover.
  • Aura cannot be used on a playing card that already has an edition.

Strategy

  • Aura applies a random Edition on one playing card of the player's selection, be it Foil which gives +50 Chips, Holographic giving +10 Mult or Polychrome which is a X1.5 Mult when scored. This effect while being very good early on for easy scoring, needs to be used on specific cards for the best value, and even then rarely provides a large benefit, which may make it not too appealing.
  • Any method of duplicating playing cards buffed by Aura like Death, DNA or Cryptid can help finding them easier, which creates easier scoring opportunities.
  • Each Edition has a different usage and thus have different availability and usage across multiple builds. The following can be treated as a 'guide' for choosing whether to use Aura or not:
    • Foil works miraculously on the Plasma Deck due to the tendency of Chips-oriented builds on it. A 5-card hand with all Foil gives an extra +250 Chips, equal to Stuntman, which is an amazing source of scoring that's even retriggerable by certain Jokers. Outside of it, Foil tends to fall off, due to Chips not necessarily being needed when on a build heavily favoring Mult. Still, it can be good in certain builds where the lack of a reliable Chips source can make it shine.
    • Holographic serves as the middle ground when using Aura. Its effect tends to fall off quite a lot, due to most builds requiring lots of XMult to function, and +10 Mult doesn't bring a massive benefit. Still, this Edition has its uses in the early game, if no reliable + Mult Joker are found, and on some builds extra Mult added can go a long way. Such an example would be on a build that has lots of XMult Jokers, but a small base Mult to begin with.
    • Polychrome is by far the best edition for almost all builds, being an XMult effect that's comparable to Ancient Joker or Baseball Card, provided the player has many of them to play. On the early game where not much access to Planets is available, one might find it a struggle to use Polychrome efficiently, but once a high enough base Mult is reached it fits seamlessly.
  • It is generally recommended to use Aura on cards already improved with Enhancements and Seals, and if not at disposal, at least on viable ranks.
    • Any kind of retrigger works with Aura, and so the player is incentivized to use it on 2, 3, 4, 5 for Hack, face cards for Sock and Buskin, or cards with Red Seal.
  • Since cards with editions cannot be overwritten by other editions, it can sometimes be beneficial to skip Aura if there is only one copy of the desired card in the deck and one of the editions is undesirable.

Trivia

  • Aura, when referring to spiritualism, is a form of emanation surrounding the body of a person and acts as the most essential part of the individual.
