Gold Cards

Gold Card
Effect
$3 if this card is held in hand at end of round

Gold Cards are Enhanced playing cards that give $3 if held in hand at the end of the round. If utilizing Gold Cards, the best way to get the maximum value is to increase hand size. It can also be beneficial to use Jokers that score with cards held in hand, allowing for smaller hands to be played. There are a few ways to get Gold Cards, including:

  • The Devil can make 1 playing card in your hand a Gold Card.
  • Incantation, Familiar, and Grim can add Gold Number, Face, and Ace cards, respectively.
  • Standard Packs can contain Gold Cards.
  • Illusion allows for Gold Cards to be found in the shop.
  • Midas Mask can add the Gold enhancement to up to 5 cards per hand.

Synergies

Smaller hands provide the maximum potential value for Gold Cards. High Card is the best hand if you have a lot of Gold Cards in your deck, but other small hands like Pair and Three of a Kind can also work. If using Golden Ticket, however, larger hands can actually be better than smaller ones.

Painted Deck allows for more Gold Cards to be held in hand at the end of the round, increasing profit.

Paint Brush and Palette both allow for more Gold Cards to be held in hand at the end of the round.

  • Cryptid can create copies 2 copies of a Gold Card. Because these cards are added to your hand, these Gold Cards can be utilized immediately.
  • Red Seals retrigger the effect of a Gold Card, giving $6 per Gold Card instead of $3.
  • Blue Seals activate on the same condition as Gold Cards, and can be added to a Gold Card to gain a Planet card and $3 at the end of the round.
  • Mime retriggers the Gold Card's effect. This can be further increased with Blueprint and/or Brainstorm.
  • Golden Ticket awards $4 when a Gold Card is scored. This is especially powerful with retriggers.
  • Midas Mask allows for up to 12 Gold Cards to be made without any deck fixing, assuming a standard 52 card deck. Each additional face card added to your deck after can be another Gold Card.
  • Juggler and Troubadour both allow for more Gold Cards to be held in hand at the end of the round.
  • Turtle Bean similarly increases hand size, albeit not as permanently as the other 2 bonus hand size Jokers.
  • DNA, if copied with Blueprint or Brainstorm can net 1 Gold Card to your hand per time it is copied. This increases the amount of Gold Cards in your deck while also providing extra money for that hand, provided hand after using DNA defeats the Blind.
  • Shoot the Moon, Raised Fist, and Baron can provide scoring from cards held in hand, allowing for smaller hands to be played and more Gold Cards to be utilized.
  • Economy-based scalers, such as Bull, Bootstraps, and Flash Card, appreciate the extra money brought in by Gold Cards.
  • The Serpent gives +2 hand size per discard and hand if only 1 card is played or discarded.

Anti-Synergies

  • Five-Card Draw does not work well with Gold Cards due to the decreased hand size and banning of hand size-increasing Jokers.

Generally, large hands like a Straight or Flush Five are not good with Gold Cards, as you want to have as many Gold Cards in your hand as possible before defeating a Blind. However, if you have a Golden Ticket, large hands can actually be better than small hands.

  • Ectoplasm reduces hand size by 1, preventing 1 Gold Card for being held in hand at the end of the round. This only gets worse the more Ectoplasms are used. However, the +1 Joker slot can outweigh the hand size reduction in some cases.
  • Ouija also permanently reduces hand size by 1, though its upside is significantly less helpful than Ectoplasm's. This Spectral card should be avoided entirely if utilizing Gold Cards.
  • Merry Andy reduces hand size, and its +3 discards is not very useful unless you only have a few Gold Cards in your deck.
  • Stuntman is similar to but more severe than Merry Andy for utilizing Gold Cards.
  • The Manacle reduces hand size, therefore allowing fewer Gold Cards to be utilized.
  • The Hook can discard Gold Cards before scoring, allowing less money to be made.
  • The Psychic can be devastating if your score is reliant on held in hand effects.

Usage notes

  • If using Mime and a copy Joker ( Blueprint and Brainstorm,) it is possible to copy your best scoring Joker when playing a hand, and while the hand is scoring, move your copy Joker to copy Mime and get an extra $3 per Gold Card.
