Negative is an edition card modifier that gives +1 Joker slot or Consumable slot, depending on what type of card is Negative. The Negative edition is the rarest edition in Balatro, having a 0.3% chance to be applied to a Joker in the shop. However, the Negative edition is also the most powerful edition in the game, as the ability to hold an additional Joker has significantly more potential than even Polychrome ({{xmult|1.5}} Joker (Polychrome).png). The Negative edition inverts the colors of whatever it is applied to, and adds an additional shine on top.

Negative adds +$5 to the buy price of jokers and consumables (with Perkeo (Creates a [[Negative|{{hl|edition|Negative}}]] copy of {{hl|orange|1}} random [[Consumables|{{hl|orange|consumable}}]] card in your possession at the end of the [[The Shop|{{hl|orange|shop}}]] Find this [[Jokers|Joker]] from the [[Spectral Cards|{{hl|sblue|Soul}}]] card. There are a few ways of acquiring a Joker with a Negative edition:

• Jokers in the shop can naturally appear with the Negative edition, with a 0.3% chance of this happening.
• Ectoplasm (Add [[Card Modifiers#Editions|{{hl|edition|Negative}}]] to a random {{hl|orange|Joker,}} {{hl|red|-1}} hand size Available from start. Spectral Ectoplasm.png) applies the Negative edition to a random Joker in the player's Joker slots at the cost of -1 hand size.
• Negative Tag ( Discover the {{edition|Negative}} edition Negative tag.png) guarantees that the next Joker (without any other edition) in the shop has the Negative edition.

As for Negative consumables, the only way to acquire them is with Perkeo (Creates a [[Negative|{{hl|edition|Negative}}]] copy of {{hl|orange|1}} random [[Consumables|{{hl|orange|consumable}}]] card in your possession at the end of the [[The Shop|{{hl|orange|shop}}]] Find this [[Jokers|Joker]] from the [[Spectral Cards|{{hl|sblue|Soul}}]] card. Legendary Effect N/A (Passive) Perkeo.png). Perkeo creates Negative copy of a random consumable card, and can do so to any consumable except Black Hole (Upgrade every [[Poker Hands|{{hl|purple|poker hand}}]] by {{hl|orange|1}} level Available from start. Spectral Black Hole.png) and The Soul (Creates a [[Legendary Jokers|{{hl|purple|Legendary}}]] Joker <br> {{room}} Available from start. Spectral The Soul.png), as these 2 consumables cannot be added to your consumable slots. Because Perkeo is a Legendary Joker, however, having Negative consumables is incredibly rare, more so than Negative Jokers.

• Invisible Joker (After {{hl|orange|2}} rounds, sell this card to {{hl|orange|Duplicate}} a random Joker <br> {{currently|{{hl|orange|0}}/2}} <br> {{hl|gray|(Removes [[Negative|{{hl|edition|Negative}}]] from copy)}} Win a run without ever having more than {{hl|orange|4 Jokers}} Rare Effect N/A (Passive) Invisible Joker.png) and Ankh (Create a copy of a random [[Jokers|{{hl|orange|Joker}}]], destroy all other Jokers <br> {{hl|gray|(Removes {{hl|edition|Negative}} from copy)}} Available from start. Spectral Ankh.png) will remove the Negative edition from a Joker it copies, if it has it. This is the only way to remove an edition from a card in Balatro.
• If a Negative Joker appears in the Shop, it can be purchased even if there are no extra Joker slots available, unless, in rare cases, the current Jokers exceed the Joker slots (for example, selling Negative Invisible Joker (After {{hl|orange|2}} rounds, sell this card to {{hl|orange|Duplicate}} a random Joker <br> {{currently|{{hl|orange|0}}/2}} <br> {{hl|gray|(Removes [[Negative|{{hl|edition|Negative}}]] from copy)}} Win a run without ever having more than {{hl|orange|4 Jokers}} Rare Effect N/A (Passive) Invisible Joker.png) to replicate a Joker or in the Typecast ( ) Challenge).
• The Negative edition is almost always worth taking, especially if a good Joker appears in the shop with the Negative edition. Even if the Joker is not helpful for your build, it can be worth picking up anyways as it increases the money earned from Temperance (Gives the total sell value of all current [[Jokers]]<br>{{hl|grey|(Max of}} {{hl|orange|{{Money|50}}}}{{hl|grey|)}} Available from start. Tarot Temperance.png) and can completely nullify the Verdant Leaf ( Showdown Verdant Leaf.png) Boss Blind.
• Unlike other modifiers, the Negative effect of Joker remains effective even if it gets debuffed; only by selling Negative Joker will the Joker slot decrease.
  • However, if a debuffed Joker (either from Crimson Heart ( Showdown Crimson Heart.png) or Perishable () sticker) gains Negative () enhancement afterwards, the Joker slot will not increase, and selling it will still decrease Joker slot, resulting in permanent Joker slot loss, which is likely a bug.

• This is the only edition that cannot affect playing cards, since Standard Packs, cards in the shop (with Illusion ({{hl|orange|Playing cards}} in shop may have an [[Card Modifiers#Enhancements|{{hl|sblue|Enhancement}}]], [[Card Modifiers#Edition|{{hl|edition|Edition}}]], and/or a [[Card Modifiers#Seal|{{hl|orange|Seal}}]] Buy a total of 20 Playing cards from the shop Upgraded Illusion.png),) and Aura (Add [[Foil|{{hl|edition|Foil}}]], [[Holographic|{{hl|edition|Holographic}}]], or [[Polychrome|{{hl|edition|Polychrome}}]] effect to {{hl|orange|1}} selected card in hand Available from start. Spectral Aura.png) only offer Foil ({{chips|+50}} Joker (Foil).png), Holographic ({{mult|+10}} Joker (Holographic).png), and Polychrome ({{xmult|1.5}} Joker (Polychrome).png).
• The Antimatter ({{hl|edition|+1}} Joker Slot Redeem Blank 10 total times Upgraded Antimatter.png) voucher always has the Negative filter applied to it when it appears in the shop.
