Negative Effects
In Balatro, negative effects are status conditions that are inflicted on playing cards or Jokers, affecting a player's hand and strategy. Most negative effects come from Boss Blinds.
Debuffed

A debuffed card has its special properties and enhancements disabled. Cards with this effect are visually marked with a red "X".
What a debuffed card loses:
- Chips and multipliers: A debuffed card does not contribute its base chip or mult values, including those from enhanced versions like Bonus Cards or bonus chips of Hiker.
- Special card abilities: The unique effects of cards with Editions, Enhancements, Seals, by scoring, discarding, or holding these cards, are nullified.
- Wild Cards revert to the base suit. However, they are still debuffed by effects inflicted on any suits.
- Stone Cards will not restore their original suit and rank after being debuffed (which means they still cannot make hands or trigger Blackboard / Flower Pot).
- Joker triggers from card effects: Jokers that trigger an effect when a card is played, discarded, or held will not activate from a debuffed card.
What a debuffed card keeps:
- Basic properties: A debuffed card still functions as a standard playing card, with its base suit and rank. It can still be used to form scoring hands (even if all played cards are debuffed), not affecting the base chip and multiplier values of them.
- Joker effects independent of specific card: Any Joker that does not apply to a specific card, such as those based on hands (like Zany Joker and Burnt Joker) or combinations of multiple cards (like Blackboard and Flower Pot), will still be effective.
- Some special effects can still be applied to debuffed cards, like DNA.
For debuffs on specific types of cards, modifying their Enhancement using Tarot cards (for example, using Justice to change a card into Glass) will remove the debuff. Similarly, for The Pillar, if the card is modified by a tarot card, it will now be "different" and thus no longer be debuffed. However, this does not apply to suit and rank changes, as well as the Aura Spectral card.
The debuff can be triggered by these Boss Blinds:
| Name | Effect |
|---|---|
| The Club | All Club cards are debuffed |
| The Goad | All Spade cards are debuffed |
| The Head | All Heart cards are debuffed |
| The Pillar | Cards played previously this Ante are debuffed |
| The Plant | All face cards are debuffed |
| The Window | All Diamond cards are debuffed |
| Verdant Leaf | All cards debuffed until 1 Joker sold |
In the challenge Double or Nothing, all played cards become debuffed after scoring.
Debuffed Jokers
The Crimson Heart Boss Blind temporarily debuffs a random Joker for each hand (for the Joker debuffed in the last hand, its debuff will last until the next shop), and Jokers with Perishable stickers become permanently debuffed after five rounds.
A debuffed Joker no longer provides any of its original functions or edition. Specifically, for the Negative edition, if a negative Joker is debuffed afterwards, the added Joker Slot will still be valid; however, if a debuffed Joker gains negative afterwards (including a temporary debuff from Crimson Heart), the Joker slot will not increase, while selling it will result in permanent Joker slot loss, which is likely a bug.
However, it can still provide passive effects to other Jokers, such as the sell value effect of Gift Card or Swashbuckler, +3 Mult for Abstract Joker or X1.5 Mult for Baseball Card (for uncommon Jokers).
Debuffed Jokers held at the end of Ante 8 will still gain a Stake Sticker.
Face-down

The face-down effect causes cards drawn into your hand to be turned face-down. The player cannot see a card's rank or suit, which can make forming specific hands or playing around certain Jokers extremely difficult.
However, these face-down cards still sort correctly into rank or suit position when ordering your cards, which can be used to guess their rank or suit if needed.
A played hand that includes face-down cards will have its type displayed as "???"; scoring and other effects will still perform as normal.
Using Tarot or Spectral cards (for example, The Empress) to modify face-down cards can make them briefly uncovered.
Face-down is card-bounded, which means using Strength to turn face cards into non-face ones during The Mark, or using Death to copy a face-down card to an upturned one will only briefly uncover it; conversely, turning a non-face card into a face card during The Mark won't make it face-down.
The face-down effect can be caused by these Boss Blinds:
| Name | Effect |
|---|---|
| The Fish | Cards drawn face down after each hand played |
| The House | First hand is drawn face down |
| The Mark | All face cards are drawn face down |
| The Wheel | 1 in 7 cards get drawn face down |
In the challenge X-ray Vision, 1 in 4 cards are drawn face-down.
Face-down Jokers
The Amber Acorn Boss Blind flips and shuffles all of the player's Jokers, which makes it impossible to know which Joker is which without observing their effects during play. Since the order of Joker effects matters greatly for scoring (see Activation Sequence), this can severely disrupt a carefully constructed strategy.
A possible strategy is to play a low-level hand, distinguish the Jokers by paying attention to their triggering, and adjust their order.
These Jokers have unique visual backs that can still be recognized when face-down:
Force-selected
Force-selected card, caused by only Showdown Boss Blind Cerulean Bell, prevents the player from deselecting a particular card in their hand, so it must be included when playing/discarding/using consumables on cards.
Force-selected cards can not be released by modifying them (even with Death, the converted card will still be force-selected). The only way is destroying them (for example, with The Hanged Man).
