Joker slot is a core gameplay mechanic in Balatro that determines the maximum number of Joker cards a player can hold simultaneously. For most Decks, the default count of Joker slots is 5.

Each Joker the player has occupies one of the slots. If all Joker slots are full, the player generally cannot acquire new Jokers without selling or destroying an existing one to free up space. The exception to this rule is the Negative ({{hl|edition|+1}} Joker or Consumable slot Joker (Negative).png) edition.

• Black Deck ( {{hl|orange|+1}} Joker slot <br> {{hl|blue|-1}} hand every round Discover at least {{hl|orange|100}} items from your [[collection]] Black Deck.png) provides +1 Joker slot every round, for a total of 6.
• Five-Card Draw ( ) provides +2 Joker slots every round, for a total of 7.

• Negative ({{hl|edition|+1}} Joker or Consumable slot Joker (Negative).png) adds +1 Joker slot.

• Antimatter ({{hl|edition|+1}} Joker Slot Redeem Blank 10 total times Upgraded Antimatter.png) adds +1 Joker slot.

• Painted Deck ( {{hl|orange|+2}} hand size, <br> {{hl|red|-1}} Joker slot Win a run with any [[Decks|deck]] on the {{Stake|Green}} difficulty or harder Painted Deck.png) and Blast Off ( ) reduce Joker slots by 1, for a total of 4.
• Cruelty ( ) reduces Joker slots by 2, for a total of 3.
• Typecast ( ) sets Joker slots to 0 after defeating Ante 4's boss.
• Jokerless ( ) sets Joker slots to 0.
