Discards

Discards are one of the primary actions that a player can perform during each round and are the main tool that the player has to locate certain cards from their deck to play in each round. There are many effects, both positive and negative, that are able to be triggered upon discarding. Some Jokers like Trading Card or Burnt Joker will activate on the player's first discard but will not reactivate on subsequent discards. Other jokers like Banner or Delayed Gratification will have a stronger effect if the player has more unused discards.

By default, each run will start with a total of 3 discards per round (2 discards on Blue Stake or above), however, this number is able to be modified to be higher or lower depending on the deck or challenge deck being used. For example, the Red Deck will increase the starting number of discards by 1 per round; or in the Five-Card Draw challenge deck, the discards per round is set at 6 to offset the starting max hand size of 5.

Usage Notes

There are three main methods for a player to discard cards from their hand:

  • Standard Discard: This is when the player selects up to 5 cards they do not want to play so that they can be replaced with up to 5 new cards from the player's deck. Doing so costs 1 discard and will trigger any effects such as Purple Seal, Green Joker, or Mail-In Rebate that activate when discarding a card.
  • Throwaway Hand: A common scenario that will occur is that the player will have used all their discards and still not have found the cards they need. In this scenario, the player can elect to play what would be considered to be a throwaway hand where they play as many non-essential cards from their hand as they are able to then draw that many new cards from their deck. In doing so, they are using a hand as if it was a discard. Using throwaway hands comes at a cost though, as each additional hand that the player has upon finishing the round would normally be converted to $1.
  • If playing a hand type that requires less than 5 cards, any additional cards that are not scored can be pseudo-discarded, allowing for your discards to be utilized when really needed.

One effective way that pseudo-discards can be used is with Ride the Bus as the player can use the following methods to remove face cards from their hand using pseudo-discards without resetting the Mult on Ride the Bus:

  • The player can play a High Card Hand using 1 Ace and up to 1 King, 1 Queen, and 1 Jack, as long as the hand does not also contain a 10 to form a straight or all match the same suit to form a flush.
  • The player can play a Pair, Three of a Kind, or Four of a Kind using any non-face card rank plus up to 1 King, 1 Queen, and 1 Jack.

Using pseudo-discards is also a very effective method when facing The Psychic as it can be used to allow hands types with less than 5 cards to be valid for scoring.

Increasing Discards

  • Red Deck provides +1 discard every round.
  • Five-Card Draw provides +3 discards every round, for a total of 6.
  • Golden Needle also provides +3 discards every round, for a total of 6.
  • Drunkard provides +1 discard each round.
  • Merry Andy provides +3 discards each round.
  • The Wasteful and Recyclomancy Vouchers each add 1 discard.

Decreasing Discards

  • Blast Off reduces discards by 1, for a total of 2.
  • Burglar sets discards to 0 each round.
  • The Water sets discards to 0 for the round.
  • Blue Stake reduces discards by 1, for a total of 2.
  • Petroglyph reduces discards by 1 as a cost for decreasing the ante by 1.

Synergies

  • Black Deck makes discards significantly more important because of its reduced scoring potential each round.

While all hands can benefit from discarding, hands that are difficult to make, such as Straights, Four of a Kinds, and Flushes benefit the most. Hands like Two Pair, Pair, and especially High Card are generally easy to draw so discards aren't as necessary for these hand types, however, discarding can still be very beneficial when playing these hands if you first want to find specific cards for effects such as DNA to trigger duplicate if you have modified cards in your deck.

  • Yorick is the most powerful Joker that benefits from discards. Its ability can scale by X1 Mult or X2 Mult each round with the right Jokers and Vouchers, making it an incredibly powerful source of scoring. However, it is important to utilize hand size upgrades or deck fixing to be able to keep cards you need for scoring, as it's best to discard the maximum of 5 cards to scale Yorick.
  • Mail-In Rebate is able to give you up to $25 per discard used if you have 5 copies of the selected rank to discard, and this can be further repeated for each Blueprint or Brainstorm copying Mail-In Rebate's effect.
  • Mystic Summit rewards you for using all of your discards, which is often done in normal play anyway. This is even easier and more beneficial if you have a reduced number of discards. However, this can cause issues where you prematurely use all your discards if you are unable to win the round in a single hand.
  • Hit the Road is similar to Yorick in its effect, although less powerful long term as it resets every round. Despite this, Hit the Road is still a very powerful Joker if your deck contains enough Jacks.
  • Burnt Joker only activates on discard. Because it can only trigger on your first discarded hand, sometimes it is worth playing unwanted cards until the desired hand type is ready to be discarded.
  • Faceless Joker will give you $5 each time 3 or more face cards are discarded at the same time.
  • Reserved Parking will give greater yields if the player first uses their discards to find additional face cards to hold in hand.
  • Castle will provide a scaling source of Chips if the player is able to successfully discard cards matching the selected suit each round.
  • Purple Seals reward discarding by giving a Tarot Card when doing so.

Anti-Synergies

  • Green Deck punishes you for using discards, albeit not as much as it does for hands.
  • Delayed Gratification only gives money if no discards were used, forcing you to either not use any discards or lose out on a payout at the end of the round.
  • Banner is similar to Delayed Gratification discouraging you from using discards. However, it will only decrease in power when discarding, rather than being completely disabled.
  • Ramen is often a more powerful version of Banner giving XMult instead of Chips. Unlike Banner however, Ramen punishes the amount of cards discarded, rather than the number of discards used.
  • Green Joker will lose 1 Mult each time a discard is used.
  • Half Joker will restrict your ability to use pseudo-discards significantly.
  • Blue Joker will have its Chip value decreased with each card that is discarded.
  • Splash will prevent you from using pseudo-discards as all cards will score including ones you do not want.
