Glossary

This page is a list of terms commonly used in Balatro, sorted by alphabetical order. Some terms may have separate pages that go more in-depth on definitions, strategies, and synergies.

C

Contains

The played hand has the referenced Poker Hand as a part of it. For example, a Three of a Kind "contains" a Pair, despite scoring as a Three of a Kind. A Four of a Kind played with five cards of the same suit "contains" a Flush, and will trigger Flush Joker effects. Notably, a Four of a Kind is not considered to "contain" Two Pair, since Two Pair requires two different ranks to be counted.

D

Modifying your deck in any way during a run.

Removes selected cards from your hand and draws a number of random cards from your deck equal to the number of cards discarded.

E

Economy

Also known as "econ" for short, your economy is the total amount of money you have. Money in Balatro is used to buy items in the shop, which is the primary way in which you improve your run. Economy can be gained in many ways, such as; interest, payouts, Jokers, Tarot Cards, Spectral Cards, and more.

S

Sell

All consumables and non-Eternal Jokers can be sold for cash. The amount of money a card sells for is determined by its sell value.

The sell value of a card is calculated as the buy price divided by 2, and rounded down to the nearest integer. Sell value increases if a card has an edition. It can also be increased with the Gift Card Joker. Swashbuckler and Temperance give Mult and money based on the sell value of your Jokers, respectively.

Bypasses the scoring phase and shop of the blind skipped, either the Small Blind or Big Blind. Skipping a Blind skips all actions that would normally occur in a round, such as interest, blind payout, and Joker scaling.

Spawn condition

Some items in the game have rules that need to be met before they can appear in the Shop or during the run. This includes specific spawn conditions for Jokers, minimum antes for Blinds and Tags, and the base Voucher having to be redeemed for upgraded Vouchers.
